Pfeiffer parades delivery device innovations

A prototype inhaled liquid drug delivery device that claims to produce a low-speed, fine mist and small particle size was launched by German company Pfeiffer. The MicroHaler inhalation system consists of a number of disposable elements – atomiser, memory chip and drug container – and a reusable part comprising the electronic dosage system, airflow sensors and power supply.

Among the benefits cited by Pfeiffer are breath-triggered actuation, intelligent logic, monitoring of the administration course and adjustability of the droplet size distribution according to the therapy requirements. It is therefore suitable for locally acting and systemically acting drugs.

Another innovative development is the Side Actuation dispensing system for nasal application. A standard mechanical, crimp-on pump system for pharmaceuticals is placed within an outer housing that converts it into a user-friendly and hygienic pack actuated by a lever situated on the side of the outer case. This feature is said to be not only more convenient to operate, but also to require less force than standard nasal sprays. It also works at any angle rather than just in an upright position. The device includes a security cap, which prevents actuation when in place.

Other options available include a version for preservative-free formulations, tamper evidence and child resistance, and actuators for topical and oral applications, says Pfeiffer.
