Catalyst technologies company Reaxa has launched the latest additions to its range of metal scavenging products for pharma process applications. QuadraSil is derived from high quality, spherical organo-functionalised silicas and complements the company's QuadraPure range of polymer based scavenging resins.

The initial QuadraSil quartet has primary amine functionality (QuadraSil AP); mercapto functionality (QuadraSil MP); thiourea functionality (QuadraSil MTU) and triamine functionality (QuadraSil TA). QuadraSil will rapidly remove metal contaminants even in the presence of competing, complexing phosphine ligands and co-ordinating products.

Application benefits of QuadraSil include fast kinetics - with metal removal often complete within 10 minutes at room temperature - and high temperature stability. Additionally, the zero swell characteristics in organic solvents and spherical particle size enhance application in packed beds or cartridges.

QuadraSil can be used in both batch and continu-ous processing. Although primarily targeted at appli-cations within early phase development campaigns and r&d, the favourable economics of this technology should encourage large-scale manufacturing applications, Reaxa believes. QuadraSil demonstrates high loading in comparison with other commercially available silicas and can be used in both aqueous and organic solvents, without pre-wetting.

"Increasingly stringent pharma legislation is challenging conventional approaches to API and key in-termediate purification," said Dr David Pears, Reaxa's chief technology officer. "QuadraSil represents a more efficient and faster solution that avoids the waste of highly valuable product."

Earlier this year the company introduced four addi-tions to the QuadraPure range of high-purity metal scavenging resins: QuadraPure BZA (benzyl amine functionality); BDZ (amino imidazole functionality); EDA (ethylene diamine functionality) and DET (amino ethane thiol functionality). There are now 14 macro-porous and microporous products in the QuadraPure and QuadraSil ranges.
