Sessions of York now has the capability of printing and verifying Reduced Space Symbology (RSS) barcodes.

Used mainly in the US, RSS is the latest barcode type for space-constrained identification from EAN International and the Uniform Code Council. RSS barcodes have been specifically developed to solve problems in the grocery, cosmetics and healthcare industries where items are too small to allow for older barcode symbologies.

The symbology family consist of three groups - RSS-14, RSS Limited and RSS Expanded. Sessions will primarily be operating with RSS-14, which is a linear symbology that can be scanned and decoded in four segments and then reconstructed - facilitating omnidirectional scanning. It encodes 14 digits of numerical data used to identify Global Trade Item Numbers (GTIN) for scanning in the supply chain.

Sessions is also able to verify RSS-14 Stacked Omnidirectional, which allows the barcode's length to be shortened and RSS-14 Truncated which shortens the height of the barcode, ensuring the barcode suits the size and format of the product for easier and more efficient scanning.
