Sugar company launches excipient for direct compression
European sugar producer Beghin Say has developed a new sugar for direct compression to meet the requirements of the pharmaceutical industry. Compressuc is an anhydrous excipient compliant with USP-NF pharmacopoeia and consists of 95% saccharose and a maximum 5% inverted sugar and maltodextrin. It is said to have good taste masking properties, making it suitable for use in chewable, suckable or effervescent tablets.
Compressuc is manufactured using a new atomisation process, the company says, and consists of spherical, hollow particles, which give it good flow and compressibility qualities. It can be used to manufacturing tablets by direct compression, without the need for preliminary preparation stages, such as granulation, drying or calibration.
According to Beghin Say, tablets made using Compressuc will be uniform in weight, smooth and shiny in appearance and will be very hard, even when low levels of compression force are used. The excipient also ensures precise dosing by facilitating homogeneous mixtures of the active ingredients.
