German companies Wacker Specialties and Juelich Fine Chemicals (JFC) have entered into a collaboration in the field of biocatalytic ketone-compound reduction to chiral alcohols.

The co-operation will strengthen Wacker's biotechnology platform, while JFC will benefit from wider market access in the area of chiral alcohols for all production scales.

Wacker Specialties is providing its broad technology portfolio in the organic synthesis of starter products - i.e. the ketone compounds - and the chemical conversion of chiral alcohols, as well as its biotech expertise. JFC is supplying its enzymes, developed and produced in house, as well as a broad knowledge of enzyme technology and special expertise in biotransformation.

Among the products already developed as part of the collaboration are optically active β-hydroxy esters, hydroxy ketones, diols and α-chloroalcohols. The two companies plan to expand their range of chiral alcohols, and the co-operation ensures that all the products will always be available in any amount required: JFC offers laboratory and kilogram quantities, while Wacker covers larger quantities.
