Ethics isn’t a new idea in engineering ... but it has never been more important.

As the discipline evolves thanks to new technologies such as AI, sensors, robotics and automation, with an increased focus on sustainability and decarbonisation, ethical guidelines must evolve with it.

As the Institution for Chemical Engineers (IChemE) recently launched its new Code of Conduct and Ethics, Professor Raffaella Ocone (pictured), the Institution’s President, explains why ethics are more important than ever, and why now is the right time to update it.

At IChemE, we recently decided to launch a new Code of Conduct and Ethics to set out where we see the Chemical Engineering profession right now – and to point the way to where we want the profession to be in the future.

This new Code captures our aspirations, ambitions and commitments, and what we think it means to be a chemical, biochemical and process engineer.
