Accurate multiple-asset AIDC solution
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is not the only logistics solution for rapid multiple product identification and data capture. At PPMA an alternative solution, using digital imaging technology, was introduced by US-based ImageID.

The Visidot reader is an imaging device that can capture data from a loaded pallet, enumerate different types of product on the incoming pallet, and identify if any items are missing or if too many are present.
The reader captures multiple standard black and white 2D matrix codes (ISO 16022) simultaneously. These codes can be printed using standard barcode printers and can contain large amounts of product/batch data.
The system can read one whole side of a pallet in one go from a considerable distance - as long as it has line of site. Installation of more than one camera enables all four sides of the pallet to be read. The system can also work in harsh environments and is not affected by water, metals or radio frequency interference. It can even capture codes when items are in motion.
The digital reader detects all the 2D matrix codes as an image, decodes them and exports the data to a central management console. An electronic library of each scanned image can be saved, providing proof of what was on the pallet when it left the warehouse and enabling comparison with its contents on arrival at its next destination. In this way it can be used for visual proof of shipment/receipt and asset condition.
The manufacturers, currently trialling the device in warehouses in Europe, claim that Visidot is a much cheaper and more robust solution than RFID technology.
