Active temperature control

Published: 1-Jul-2002

One quarter of all serious damage to pharmaceuticals relates to a lack of temperature control in transportation. To overcome this, Swedish company Envirotainer was showing a cargo temperature management system.

Most temperature-controlled supply chain systems rely on passive technology to keep temperatures down, e.g. cool packs, or polystyrene to insulate the container.

The new active temperature control technology is cost effective and consists of high performance insulation material, and an internal fan and sensor. It works by cooling the warm air drawn in by the fan. The warm air passes over dry-ice, which is in a separate compartment, and is cooled via the heat exchange before being guided back out to the loading area. This convection process promotes a constant, regulated environment providing a stable pre-set temperature for up to 72h. The internal sensor helps keep the temperature within the required limits, which can range from -20°C to +20°C, depending on the product.
