Ascot Fine Chemicals has been awarded a special commendation by the Royal Society of Chemistry for developing the Ferrotane range of chiral ligands. The RSC's Industrial innovation team awards recognised the company's work on the compounds, used in asymmetric hydrogenation of itaconate derivatives.

ChiroTech, now part of AFC, first made a patent application relating to its work in chiral monophosphetanes in 1995. Since then, it has carried out manufacture of the catalysts and brought the products to commercialisation in 2000.

Accepting the award, the company's head of collaborative research, Dr Ian Lennon, said it was a credit to AFC's core research and collaborative research teams.
