Biacore receives $2m for patent infringement

Swedish company Biacore International has received a US$2m (Euro 211m) damages payment from Thermo BioAnalysis for infringing Biacore's surface chemistry patent (US patent no. 5,436,161). The amount, was calculated based on a royalty rate of 40% of the sales price of each IAsys biosensor system sold by Thermo since 25 July, 1995, plus interest.

Dr Ulf Joensson, ceo of Biacore International, said: 'Our patent portfolio is a key element in Biacore's success and this payment reinforces the value of the time and effort we have invested in building our intellectual property position.'
