bioMerieux strengthens its position in bacteriology

French in vitro diagnostics bioMerieux has acquired the Spanish firm Biomedics. This acquisition will both enhance bioMerieux's culture media production capacity and reinforce its presence in the Spanish and Portuguese markets.


French in vitro diagnostics bioMerieux has acquired the Spanish firm Biomedics. This acquisition will both enhance bioMerieux's culture media production capacity and reinforce its presence in the Spanish and Portuguese markets.

A leader in Spain in the field of bacteriology, particularly in culture media, Madrid-based Biomedics has an output of 11 million Petri dishes per year. The company employs 30 people, with 2006 sales of Euro 4.1m.

In the coming years, bioMerieux plans to invest in the Biomedics site to increase its long-term industrial capacity.

'Our strategic ambition is to become the undisputed world-leader in microbiology. The acquisition is one more step towards our goal. Biomedics brings us not only new production capabilities for our culture media, but also a team with an expertise that will help us to better satisfy our customers' needs,' said Stephane Bancel, ceo of bioMerieux.

bioMerieux has a worldwide network of culture media production sites with its main site in Craponne (France) and regional sites in Basingstoke (England), Brisbane (Australia), Lombard, Illinois (US), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and now Madrid (Spain).

The details of the deal were not disclosed.
