Following pressure from the EU

The Brazilian government is tightening its gelatin production controls after pressure from the European Union (EU) about health concerns regarding this key capsule ingredient.

The European Commission (EC) was threatening import restrictions on Brazilian gelatin after the European Veterinary Office raised consumer health concerns.

A statement from the Brazilian government released by the EC included a commitment to ‘update the current legislation’, specifically to improve controls on production processes between the slaughterhouse and the gelatin manufacturer, notably tanneries that separate this substance from other animal materials.

Current controls were ‘lacking focus’ in this area, said the statement. New rules would also control the transport of gelatin.
