San Diego-based Illumina has named Dr William Rastetter, as non-executive chairman of the company's board of directors and John Stuelpnagel, D.V.M., has been promoted to the newly created position of chief operating officer.
'Given the increasing governance responsibilities of the board, and consistent with good corporate governance practices, our board has appointed Bill Rastetter as non-executive Chairman,' stated Jay Flatley, Illumina president and ceo. 'Bill brings leadership and proven industry experience to the position of chairman of the Illumina board.'
Dr Rastetter continues full-time as the executive chairman of Biogen Idec, where before the merger he served with Idec Pharma since 1986 in a number of senior positions. Previously, Dr Rastetter worked at Genentech from 1982-1986, and was an associate professor of chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Commenting on Dr Stuelpnagel's promotion to coo, Flatley noted: 'As an Illumina founder, John Stuelpnagel is both a visionary and major contributor to our growing commercial success. I've worked side by side with John since 1999 and am very pleased that he will be playing a leading role in directing many day-to-day operations of the Company.'
