Comah quantification

COMAH, or control of major accident hazards regulations, imposes stringent controls on all companies that use, store or process chemicals: because speciality chemical companies hold stocks that vary greatly, it is important that they monitor the total COMAH score on their site, which dictates their reporting requirements.

All chemical sites are classified as holding chemicals either at a low level, below the COMAH threshold, or as a low tier site, with the consequent duties of reporting, or as a high tier site, with more arduous reporting requirements.

AJM Consulting Services has developed a software program, the MS2 manufacturing support system, that computes the COMAH score for the site on a continuous basis. This is particularly important for a manufacturer where the materials and quantities can vary widely.

Such situations need an input linking the materials control and management system with the process control system, and this has been achieved in linking live tank contents data available from the DeltaV digital automation system from Emerson Process Management with the MS2 manufacturing Support System from AJM. The system also provides an archived summary of the COMAH data, with the ability to show trends, and a display showing the contribution to the COMAH scores made by each class of material stored.
