For the fifth consecutive year, the Dan David Prize, headquartered at Tel Aviv University, will award three prizes of US$1m for outstanding scientific, technological, cultural or social achievement. There are three categories based around the 'time dimensions' of the past, present and future:

• for the past - 'Preserving Cultural Heritage: Individuals' Contributions', which is concerned with 'constructed heritage', such as buildings; 'living heritage', such as beliefs, social practices, arts etc; and 'world heritage', such as 'elements common to all cultures throughout time';

• for the present - 'Journalists of Print Media', which will honour journalists who promote human rights, democracy and pluralism, encourage freedom of political and cultural expression.

• for the future - 'Cancer Therapy', which will recognise individuals' initiatives aimed to reduce cancer-related mortality and alleviate the daily suffering of cancer patients.

The award is named after Dan David, president of Photo Me International, and the laureates annually donate 20 scholarships of US$15,000 to 'outstanding young researchers'.
