Great Lakes Fine Chemicals (GLFC) has recently completed a phased, five-year, US$8m investment programme at its Holywell site in Wales.

The money was used to upgrade the existing the plant and build new laboratory facilities. The $3.5m (€3.03m) building was specially designed to allow for future expansion and comprises two r&d chemistry laboratories, one analytical laboratory, two segregated cGMP kilo-labs and a dedicated area for thermochemical analysis.

The remainder of the investment was used to upgrade the cGMP capabilities of the site and also provided for new filter/driers, improved materials handling, and enhanced cooling and environmental controls.

GLFC has also entered into a collaborative research programme with the Chemistry Department at The University of Wales, Bangor that will investigate novel routes to the synthesis of amino acids.
