Global plan to halt TB
A global plan to halt the spread of tuberculosis has been launched by a coalition of global groups, including the World Bank and the WHO.
The Stop TB Partnership wants to reverse the current epidemic, which killed nearly two million people last year, and which has gained strength by association with the HIV/AIDS pandemic, and growing drug-resistance.
The plan includes wider access to DOTS, the strategy where patients are treated with a powerful combination of medicines, as well as prevention of multi-drug-resistant TB, development of new drugs with a shorter treatment period and strategies to improve the treatment of HIV-positive TB patients.
