The European Commission has authorised Germany to grant €78m (US$92m) to help Merck KGaA build a new biopharmaceuticals plant for oncology products in Jena, Thyringia.

The plant will focus on innovative oncology products based on antibodies from the cloning of animal cells to treat various cancers.

The aid, which is below the 35% maximum proportion of total costs allowed for such payments, will help create 280 direct jobs and a further 211 jobs indirectly. The total cost of the project is €254m ($298 m).

Brussels also approved the payment because biopharmaceuticals is a growth sector generally.
