GSK aid to go smoke-free

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) Consumer Healthcare, the marketer of Nicorette nicotine gum, has joined together with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the South Bay, California, US, to encourage 'smoke-free lives' with MyCityMyArt, an educational programme designed to teach the African-American youth population about the dangers of smoking.

The programme, which began in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Atlanta in August, includes an art competition, art lessons for children, information about the risks of smoking and what children can do to keep from taking up the habit, and a virtual art gallery to display their quit-smoking themed artwork.

Cre8, a professional commercial artists alliance based in Los Angeles, is running some of the art classes, and will create a quit-smoking themed mural that will become part of a competition for artists from the four cities involved. The entries will be posted online at www.mycitymyart.com along with designs created by the children. GSK Consumer Healthcare has donated $7,500 to support the scheme, and each child will receive two colour prints of their artwork.
