CPhI show organiser CMPi will expand its pharma services event portfolio with the debut of CPhI South America in 2008.

The new show, which will be held at Expo Center Norte in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 9-11 September, marks the latest phase in the global roll-out of the annual CPhI events programme, which also comprises CPhI Worldwide, CPhI Japan, CPhI China and CPhI India.

Expo Center Norte is Brazil's premier exhibition centre. Since opening in 1993, the 62,436m2 venue has hosted 665 events, 86,748 exhibitors and more than 21 million visitors.

'Our research has shown a clear requirement for a dedicated pharma services event to cater for the rapidly emerging South American market, which boasts a growth rate that exceeds the global average and is second only to China,' said CMPi events director Annemieke Timmers.

'The pharmaceutical majors are active in all the South American countries and recent years have seen the Indian companies moving into the region through strategic acquisition.

'The introduction of patent legislation, similar to that seen recently in India, will also see a cessation of the manufacture of 'pirate copy' drugs. Not only will this make the region a more attractive business arena for Western firms, but the South American companies will need to replace this business,' she added

The most recent CPhI to be launched, in India (Mumbai 1-3 December, 2006), was attended by more than 11,000 visitors, making this the largest ever debut for the show globally since its 1990 inception.

Meanwhile, CMPi has announced the dates for next year's CPhI Worldwide. The 2008 event - together with the ICSE contract services and P-MEC equipment shows - will be staged at the Frankfurt Messe from 30 September to 2 October. The show will take place in Halls 3, 4, 5 and 6.
