A joint research team in Japan has begun developing a next-generation drug formulation system to shorten significantly the time required to develop new medicines.

The new system involves a screening process to select candidate substances that are most promising from among large quantities of materials. Robots and genetically modified yeasts will he used to conduct experiments reacting the candidate drugs with the proteins they target.

The system is expected to be able to analyse more than 1m types of materials in around two weeks, work that would currently require at least two years to complete.
