Johnsen & Jorgensen bring Guraet to UK

Packaging container specialist Johnsen & Jorgensen has entered into an arrangement with Gujarat Glass to supply the Indian company\'s range of pharmaceutical glass products in the UK.


Gujarat Glass is one of the world's largest producers of glass containers, with state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities at Jambusar and Kosamba turning out 7 million bottles and vials a day. The company has an annual turnover of $60m.

Zydus Cadila and Australian company Mayne have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the opportunities from a joint venture plant. Mayne said it was looking at a range of investment opportunities and could spend up to US$450m on acquisitions. It makes and distributes pharmaceuticals and health-related consumer products, and runs diagnostic services, including medical centres. It already has a cytotoxic plant at Mulgrave in Australia.

Zydus Cadila makes drugs in finished dosage forms, and its founder and executive chairman, Pankaj Patel, said the company saw 'tremendous potential' from its likely alliance with Mayne, with the joint venture able to provide competitively priced products to the world market for generic drugs

Mumbai-based Reliance Life Sciences has set up a pilot plant for the manufacture of therapeutic proteins at Kamala Mills Compound at Lower Parel in Mumbai. This facility of 50-litre capacity will produce therapeutic proteins (like streptokinase, interferon, erythropoietin and G-CSF) until the company's cGMP manufacturing facility at its Rabale complex in Navi, Mumbai, is commissioned in 2007. The 30,000ft2 facility will also undertake contract manufacturing and research activities for overseas clients. Reliance is expected to invest about Rs50 crore in its biotech expansion plan.

The Gandhi Medical College Alumni Association and the state government of Andhra Pradesh have jointly set up an animal research lab and surgical skills lab at the premises of the Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad. Dr YS Rajashekhara Reddy, chief minister of AP agreed to fund 50% of the cost of setting up these labs with the Association funding the rest. With an estimated cost of Rs 2 crore, the association also plans to set up an Alumni education centre with facilities such as mini auditorium, library and a museum.
