Markus Gemuend, Chief Executive of Lonza Group, has advised the board of directors of his decision to step down from the position as soon as a suitable replacement has been identified.

Mr Gemuend feels that given the market developments which have been impacting on the performance of Lonza in 2003, a different type of leadership is required to move the Group forward.

Mr Sergio Marchionne, Chairman of the Board of Directors, accepted the resignation on behalf of the Board. He stated: 'We are grateful for Markus' contribution to Lonza over the last two years, and we respect his decision to step down. The last 18 months have been particularly difficult as the custom manufacturing business remained under pressure. The Group now needs to rebase both its operations and expectations and reaffirm its leadership position which has been earned over many years of outstanding delivery in terms of both technology and customer service'

Mr Gemuend will remain as Chief Executive until a successor is appointed.
