UK-based particle characterisation and rheology company Malvern Instruments has entered into a distribution partnership with Parsum, of Chemnitz in Germany.

The agreement provides Malvern Instruments with worldwide distribution rights for Parsum in-line particle measurement systems and gives Malvern exclusivity in all areas except Germany, where the products will be available from both companies.

Parsum was founded in 1997 as a spin-out from the Technical University of Chemnitz. The company has developed a new, patented measuring principle known as Fiberoptical Spatial Filtering.

Its products are robust industrial instruments designed to make particle size and velocity measurements in dry powders directly in the process line. With a measurement range from 50-2500µm, they complement Malvern's Insitec range of on-line particle size analysers, which measure from 0.5-1000µm in dry powders and wet suspensions.

Parsum systems are said to require minimal installation effort and to integrate easily into processes and facilities. There are no adjustable mechanical parts and systems require no optical calibration.

'Malvern Instruments has pioneered the development and application of in-process particle characterisation systems,' said Craig Howarth, business director for Malvern Process Systems. 'Parsum's ability to measure larger particles of up to 2500µm means that we can now meet particle sizing needs across an even broader range of process applications.'

'Our agreement with Malvern Instruments is a very important step, allowing Parsum systems to be sold into process industries around the world,' added Stefan Dietrich, joint managing director of Parsum.
