New flow reactor tackles scale up problems

AM Technology, based in Runcorn, Cheshire, has developed a new flow reactor which it says is flexible and capable of handling problem fluids at low throughputs.
The patented design, referred to as the Coflore Agitated Cell Reactor (ACR), is for throughputs of 5 to 5,000 grams per hour. By using dynamic mixing and multiple reaction cells, the company says the ACR can maintain good plug flow and efficient mixing independently of throughput. The use of cells as opposed to narrow channels also improves the reactor’s tolerance to solids.
The first live chemistry trials on an ACR were recently completed at Imperial College in London. For these experiments, AM Technology used 3rd and 4th Bourne reactions. As these are mixing sensitive reactions, they are good test methods for flow reactors. The company says the results showed dramatic improvements for the ACR in terms of both flexibility and reduced pressure drop compared with a static mixer reactor.
