Engineering design and technology licensing company Ashe Morris has entered into a collaborative development agreement with Pfaudler, a unit of Robbins & Myers, to develop designs for industrial scale glass-lined reactors that incorporate Ashe Morris" Coflux technology.
UK-based Ashe Morris has developed a number of new batch and continuous reactor technologies for use primarily in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing processes. The first of these, Coflux, enables unprecedented speed and accuracy of temperature control together with integral on-line heat measurement that is applicable to virtually all designs and scales of batch reactor.
Ashe Morris's Coflux technology uses the patented concept of a variable area heating and cooling jacket. This provides a faster response time to changes in the process temperature, improves process conditions, reduces the energy waste associated with heating and cooling and delivers the ability to monitor virtually any process in real time.
Whether installed as part of a strategic cost-saving and efficiency strategy, or simply as a standalone process improvement, the technology can deliver significant benefits to many pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing processes, the company says. This is typified in applications such as crystallisations, polymerisations and bio-processing, where improvements in temperature control, real-time process monitoring and feedback process control can improve process efficiency and yields.
The collaboration with Pfaudler, a world leader in the design and manufacture of glass-lined reactor and storage vessels, is focused on developing an industrial scale mechanical design and fabrication solution in glass-lined steel that will allow Coflux to be applied to virtually any size of reactor vessel.
"Ashe Morris's technology is potentially a very important advancement in batch reactor technology," said Andrew Wills, managing director of Robbins & Myers Process Solutions Group Europe, ME & Asia. "At the end of this project, we expect to be able to demonstrate to our industrial customers that Coflux is a very real and valuable new batch reactor solution."
