Johnson Matthey has strengthened its position in the homogeneous catalysis market with a new line of metathesis catalysts.

The JM RCM 900 series provides the pharmaceutical sector with user-friendly technology for ring closing and cross metathesis, two reactions that allow novel strategies to be devised based on the easily synthesized alkene intermediates.

The ruthenium-catalysed metathesis of alkenes is a catalytic reaction of growing synthetic interest and a new class of catalysts bearing bidentate pyridine-alkoxide ligands has been developed by Ciba Specialty Chemicals and licensed to Johnson Matthey Catalysts.

These complexes are prepared through a new one pot, synthetic pathway. Research has shown that these catalysts in the reactions of cross-metathesis and ring-closing-metathesis exhibit an increased level of activity with typical model substrates.

The modular nature of the complexes will also allow further fine tuning of the structure, with the promise of increased reactivity and general applicability.
