ACHEMA 2012: Stuart launches digital waterbaths and S1600 incubator

Both incorporate BioCote antimicrobial protection

Benchtop science equipment specialist Stuart launched a range of digital waterbaths and unveiled an additional incubator in the SI Series at ACHEMA 2012.

Safe, reliable and easy to use, the new SWB:D water baths incorporate BioCote antimicrobial protection technology to reduce bacterial contamination. A new indirect heating element located beneath the bath and an integral drain make cleaning even easier.

‘Stuart SWB:D waterbaths are designed for unmonitored use in busy, multi-application laboratory environments,’ said Rob Skehens, marketing director. ‘As such they are built to be very robust. Now, these latest advances in design make them even easier to maintain.’

All Stuart SWB:D waterbaths are equipped with intelligent safety features, including a temperature control system that tracks the set temperature and controls the heater in the event of a fault and a low level water sensor which cuts off the power to eliminate the risk of boiling dry. Available in 6, 15 and 24 litre capacities, with clear polycarbonate cover and digital temperature safety controls provided as standard, these waterbaths are suitable for a diverse range of laboratory applications.

The BioCote antimicrobial protection technology is a silver ion treatment that helps to reduce levels of bacterial contamination in laboratory equipment. A recent study showed that levels of microbial contamination found on Stuart products treated with BioCote were reduced by over 96% compared with untreated equipment used in the same environment. The new SI600 incubator with built-in orbital shaker has a capacity of 115 litres – more than double that of the existing SI500 – and can accommodate up to six 2-litre Erlenmeyer flasks. This benchtop system is also equipped with Biocote antimicrobial protection and is suitable for use in cell culture, especially suspension culture applications.

In common with the S1500 the SI600 includes a retractable platform for effortless loading and unloading.

Microprocessor control delivers long-term temperature stability, with forced air circulation ensuring uniformity throughout the incubator. Separate control of temperature and shaker speed guards against accidental temperature adjustment, while USB-enabled communication allows long term tracking of the incubator temperature.

A range of stainless steel accessory racks is available with angle-adjustable holders for 1.5ml, 15ml and 50ml sample tubes. These racks magnetically couple to the orbiting platform therefore requiring no tools to fix into place.

‘With life scientists under pressure to scale up production of cell growth, the ability to use larger flasks in the new SI600 enables researchers to increase their chances of success by being able to produce more cells,’ said Skehens.

The Stuart laboratory equipment brand is available from Bibby Scientific.
