Gerresheimer launches integrated seal for tablet containers

Gerresheimer has developed the Smart Duma twist-off closure for tablet containers that also includes the foil seal required in the US. Whether with an integrated seal or without, externally the containers are identical.

The company says fillers formerly had to use different closure types for their tablets if they wished to supply the US and European markets in parallel.

"With this new development we fulfill a widespread customer wish," said Burkhard Lingenberg, Gerresheimer Group director of marketing and communication. "For international pharma markets there should as far as possible be uniform packaging - it's simply a question of efficiency."

The optional US seal is hidden away inside the twist-off cap. As the cap is closed the seal presses against the rim of the filled container - and with the cap closed this seal is fixed in place by induction. When the cap is opened again the foil divides into two layers: its aluminum layer stays firmly in place on the container as a seal, while the auxiliary layer of plastic remains in the closure.

The seal fits all 38mm containers in the Duma Twist-Off and Duma Twist-Off Q product lines and meets all the relevant pharmaceutical requirements.

Gerresheimer Plastic Packaging in Vaerloese (Denmark) developed the concept.

Gerresheimer employs around 10,000 people in more than 40 locations in Europe, the US and Asia. The product portfolio ranges from pharmaceutical vials made of glass and plastic through to complex drug-delivery systems such as sterile syringes and inhalers.
