Pharmaceutical companies snapped up a few UK Chemical Industry Awards (CIA) last night (25 June) at Murrayfield Rugby Stadium in Edinburgh, including the highest accolade of Company of the Year for GSK.

GSK also took the Responsible Care Award at its Montrose, Scotland site for being a lean primary manufacturing operation and Greg Simmonds won the Young Ambassador Award.

According to the CIA, GSK's Simmonds won over the judges by demonstrating "incredible enthusiasm for the industry, impeccable communication skills and recognisable leadership".

As Young Ambassador, Simmonds will chair the Chemical Industry Future Forum, an organisation for people who are at the early stages of their careers in chemical businesses across the UK.

Johnson Matthey beat off Aesia Pharmaceutical and GSK Ulverston to win the Environmental Leadership Award, sponsored by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

Johnson Matthey's Sustainability 2017 is a long-term vision focused on making the company a more sustainable business. Targets are set to at least double earnings per share while achieving carbon neutrality, to send zero waste to landfill, to have zero accidents and to halve the key resources that are consumed per unit of output by 2017. Good progress is being made with waste, water and energy - all have been reduced by more than one-third.

Croda International won the Responsible Care Special Award for Process Safety Leadership, also pipping shortlisted rival GSK Ulverston to the post.

For this award, sponsored by Shell Chemicals, the judges were looking for demonstrable leadership by senior management and engagement of staff at all levels, as well as excellence in process safety performance.

Croda won the award in recognition of its focus on leadership, with business sector presidents being responsible for cascading targets and objectives. Benchmarking operations have been critical in ensuring the highest performance, with each process having a full Process Risk Assessment and Basis of Safety.

Elliott paid tribute to the chemical industry and its key partners.

"This year's quality of entries reflects the outstanding contribution made by the chemical industry to a better quality of life for us all despite very tough trading times. The CIA awards are about recognising that excellence," he said.
