Pharma companies named in Chemical Industry Awards shortlist

A number of pharmaceutical companies have been shortlisted in the UK Chemical Industry Awards, which this year had a record entry.


A number of pharmaceutical companies have been shortlisted in the UK Chemical Industry Awards, which this year had a record entry.

Cramlington-based Aesica Pharmaceutical, GSK Ulverston and Johnson Matthey have all been shortlisted in the Environmental Leadership Award, which is sponsored by SEPA.

In the Low Carbon Award, sponsored by British Energy, Goole-based Croda International is in a shortlist of three.

Three pharma industry firms have also made the ABB Manufacturing and Resource Efficiency Award shortlist.

These are GSK's site in Montrose, Scotland for a lean primary manufacturing operation; Macfarlan Smith in Edinburgh for transforming the manufacture of oxycodone hydrochloride used in pharmaceuticals; and West Bromwich-based Robinson Brothers for work carried out by its process improvements groups.

Johnson Matthey has sponsored the Professional and Engineering Supplier Award, which has a shortlist of three, including ABB Engineering Services of Billingham.

Croda International and GSK Montrose have also been named in the shortlist for the Shell-sponsored Responsible Care Special Award for Process Safety Leadership.

The Skills Award, sponsored by Cogent and NSAPI, has a shortlist of six for various training schemes, including GSK Ulverston, Novartis Grimsby and the North East of England Process Industry Cluster, based in Redcar, Cleveland.

The Young Ambassador Award recognises an outstanding young person who demonstrates communication skills and leadership associated with the chemical industry and contributes to its success.

In a shortlist of six for the BASF-sponsored category are Greg Simmonds and David Weaver from GSK in Slough and Crawley, respectively, with Oluwabunmi Odumosu of Dow Corning in Barry, South Wales.

The winners will be announced on 25 June at the Chemical Awards Dinner hosted by the CIA at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh.
