NSF’s Claire Bettany shares how our QP Training Programme empowers future Qualified Persons with expert support, academic recognition, and practical success

As the Senior Training Coordinator for NSF’s Qualified Person (QP) Training Programme, I’ve had the privilege of being part of an organisation that places quality and customer service at the heart of everything it does. Having worked at NSF for just over 20 years, I’ve seen firsthand how our commitment to excellence has shaped the careers of countless professionals in the pharmaceutical industry.

NSF’s QP Training Programme is more than just a series of courses—it’s a comprehensive journey that equips aspiring QPs with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to succeed. Delivered in collaboration with the University of Strathclyde, our programme also offers postgraduate qualifications, ensuring that our delegates receive both academic and practical recognition for their efforts.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is witnessing the transformation of our delegates. Many begin their journey by attending our free QP Q&A seminars, where they can ask questions, explore eligibility requirements, and gain clarity on the path ahead. From these early steps, we support them through every stage of their development.

It’s especially fulfilling to see former trainees return to NSF later in their careers—often as mentors to the next generation of QPs. This cycle of growth and support is a testament to the strength of our community and the enduring value of our training.

I particularly enjoy meeting delegates at our in-person courses, where relationships are built that often last well beyond the classroom. And there’s nothing quite like the moment when we hear that one of our delegates has passed their viva. It’s a milestone that never loses its impact, and it reminds us why we do what we do.

At NSF, we’re proud to be part of our delegates’ professional journeys, and we remain committed to delivering training that meets the highest standards of quality and relevance. Here’s to continued success and to supporting the next generation of Qualified Persons.

Frequently asked questions

I want to be a QP, what are the requirements?

NSF offers a series of modules which have been carefully designed to meet the requirements of the UK Study Guide, which is governed by the Joint Professional Bodies (The Royal Society of Chemistry, The Society of Biology and the Pharmaceutical Society). The legal starting requirements are a first degree, or equivalent qualification, in Biology, Chemistry or Pharmacy and at least 2 years’ practical experience (1 year for Pharmacists) with the manufacture and quality control of medicinal products, on fully licensed premises within the UK/EU (fully licensed means the manufacturing site holds a full Manufacturing Authorisation/Licence).

How does the setup with the PGDip and NSF work?

NSF, in partnership with the University of Strathclyde, offer postgraduate qualifications – simply register your interest at the time of enquiry and we will make the introduction. You must hold a science degree and attend the required number of modules with NSF.

I'm a community pharmacist. How can I become a Qualified Person (QP)?

To be eligible, you need a relevant first degree and at least one year of experience. This experience must be gained in the pharmaceutical industry, specifically at a fully licensed manufacturing facility. You can begin your QP training while gaining this experience, allowing you to work toward eligibility at the same time you complete the theory.

"My journey to QP eligibility began in 2023 and NSF was there to support me along the way. All the modules I attended were run by knowledgeable tutors who were engaging and helped to challenge and expand my understanding of the many topics covered. NSF also provided the opportunity to expand my trainee QP network, which was key in arranging site visits and preparing for the QP Viva. Additionally, the feedback from NSF on my application form and my mock Viva performance helped me to successfully prepare my final application submission and ultimately pass the Viva."

"NSF helped me from the start of my enquiry through to completing my training. The training materials cover all the details required by the UK Study Guide. A free Gap Analysis was completed based on my skills and experience and I was supported excellently by my personal tutor, Catherine Kay. Catherine helped me identify the areas I needed to gain knowledge and experience. NSF also reviewed my QP application and arranged my Revision Interview. A great opportunity and I recommend all QP trainees make use of it! The networking opportunities are great and I was able to secure some good site visits. The QP training is supported by Claire Bettany, who does an amazing job in coordinating training, arranging tutor calls and answering questions. Thank you NSF - Life Sciences."

"NSF supported me right from the start of my QP training journey, all the way through to viva success. Not only did NSF provide top-quality training courses and notes, but there was also a multitude of resources available to me – from performing gap assessments on my experience, organising site visits for areas I didn’t have experience in, and viva study sessions with other trainee QPs. I also had access to a personal tutor who has supported me throughout my training journey, and I developed a wide network of fellow trainees through attending the courses from a range of dosage forms. I’d highly recommend NSF for your QP training needs!"
