Ludwig Fischer is the new head of the design department of Kugler, a subsidiary of the Optima Packaging Group that manufactures stand-alone machines and complete production lines for the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. He is returning to the company where he started his career in 1972, when he worked in the design department for filling and capping machines.

UK-based biopharmaceutical company Cyclacel has appointed Sir John Banham as non-executive chairman following the decision by Professor Sir William Stewart to step down in the wake of his appointment as shadow chair of the government's proposed Health Protection Agency. Banham joined the board of Cyclacel in July, having previously held several leading positions in British industry, and is a past treasurer of the Cancer Research Campaign.

Bespak, developer of innovative drug delivery technologies, has appointed a new head of pulmonary product development. Tol Purewal joins Bespak from 3M and will be based at Bespak's Milton Keynes site in the UK. His primary focus will be to work with the company's r&d team to develop cutting-edge drug delivery solutions and oversee product development from concept and creation and through manufacturing life. He will also take the lead in extending the business's laboratory capabilities to develop finished medicinal dosage forms for administration to and via the respiratory tract.

Beatson Clark, UK manufacturer of pharmaceutical glass packaging, has appointed Elaine Logan to the position of sales and marketing manager. She will be looking after the existing external sales and marketing team.

Mark Le Sueur has joined UK company Modular Automation as a sales engineer with specific responsibility for the chemical, medical device and pharmaceutical sectors in the UK. For the last three years he worked with a system integrator, with special responsibility for the pharmaceutical industry.

US/Israeli biopharmaceutical company D-Pharm has appointed Brian Berman as chief financial officer. He has previously worked with Paradigm Geophysical, the World Bank and as a consultant to the Israeli high-technology industry.

Argenta Discovery has appointed Colin Knox as chief financial officer. His previous positions include group accountant to London-based Life Sciences, which was acquired by US multinational Thermo Electron Corporation.
