Dr Uwe Gottschalk has been appointed vice president of the new purification technologies unit within the bioprocess business area of the biotechnology division at German company Sartorius. He was formerly head of protein purification at Bayer Health Care. The aim of the new purification technologies business unit is to integrate and expand Sartorius's purification technology portfolio and to transform these technologies into efficient process solutions.

Roger Toll, managing director of TMG Marchesini UK, has moved to Marchesini USA as company director. He will be succeeded in the UK by the sales manager, Andy Long, whose position will be filled by Kevan Baynes.

ProMinent Fluid Controls (UK) has appointed Craig Wilson as sales engineer for the north and north-eastern area of England. He will be responsible for sales of the company's precision dosing pumps, probes, controllers, specialist chemical dosing systems, RO, UV and custom-built packages.

Thermal Transfer, the UK supplier of high purity utility and process systems for the pharmaceutical, healthcare and biotech industries, has strengthened its sales management team with the appointment of Eifion Jones as business development manager - process division. He was previously technical sales manager for a specialist valve manufacturer.

Ultrasonic Scientific has made two additions to its team. Paul Cloake joins as global channel manager to support customers in the main markets of Europe, the US, Japan and Korea. Stefanie Maier has been appointed product specialist to support the customer base in Europe, both before and after sales. Fluent in German, she has specialist knowledge of polymer chemistry, including experience in a number of European countries.

Almedica International Inc., a global leader in clinical trial material management services, has appointed Robert J. Bronstein to the post of chief information officer. In a career spanning 30 years of information systems management and development for pharmaceutical r&d, he has held posts with Revlon Healthcare (now Aventis) and Warner Lambert (now Pfizer). Most recently he was vice president of operations at NDCHealth Pharmaceutical Services.

Oxxon Pharmaccines, the UK biotechnology company developing immunotherapeutics for cancer and chronic infectious diseases, has appointed Dr John Brown as a non-executive director, with immediate effect. Dr Brown was previously ceo of Acambis and took the company from early stage through flotation to profitability. He drove several key initiatives within Acambis, including the $20m acquisition of OraVax, a £23m rights issue and, in 2000, the strategic partnership with Baxter International.

Crane Process Flow Technologies (CPFT) has appointed Lidia Lui as country manager, China, based in its Beijing office. Her responsibility is to spearhead the development of CPFT's Saunders brand industrial (IDV) and aseptic (HC4) valve products and accessories into this expanding market. Sales and technical resources will also be increased in the Beijing office, to support the development of the industrial and biopharmaceutical market in this region.

Wittmann UK, leading automation supplier and materials handling specialist, has appointed Brian Clift as a new member of its CAD/CAM automated and materials handling systems design team. He was previously with Vision Controls, designing and building vision inspection systems. Wittmann UK's leading areas of automation use include medical and healthcare; pharmaceutical; packaging; and environmental industries.

Leading pharmaceutical outsource services provider Brecon Pharmaceuticals has appointed Dr Susan Miles as head of clinical trials services. A graduate from Cambridge University with a PhD from the Faculty of Medicine at Edinburgh University, she was previously ceo of Quantum Research UK, which provides electrocardiography, respiratory and blood pressure monitoring support for the clinical trials industry.

Wayne Thomas has been appointed as certification manager to run the product and production quality assurance operation relevant to equipment intended for use in hazardous areas at Sira, an independent Notified Body accredited by UKAS for its test and certification activities. He will work directly with manufacturers implementing mandatory assessments of facilities, systems and products to ensure compliance with relevant directives.

Dr William J. Jenkins has joined the board of directors of Glycart Biotechnology, a privately held Swiss company leveraging GlycoMAb technology to enhance the activity of therapeutic antibodies for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases. Dr Jenkins has been a consultant to pharmaceutical companies, investment funds and venture capital firms in the health care sector since 1999. Previously he was head of clinical development & regulatory affairs for Novartis Pharma, having held the same position pre-merger at Ciba-Geigy since 1992. Prior to that he was Head of global clinical research at Glaxo, where he oversaw the clinical development, registration and approval of drugs such as Zofran, Imigran, Serevent and Fluticasone.

CliniGenetics, a French biopharmaceutical company that identifies and develops new targets and products for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, has appointed of Doctor Jeannette Fareh as head of pharmacological and pre-clinical research. Her appointment comes at a time of rapid expansion for CliniGenetics, following encouraging results in the pre-clinical trials of a first novel molecule, Nimoxine. Prior to joining CliniGenetics, Dr Fareh was research director and responsible for pre-clinical development for the Canadian company Angiogene, specialized in the prevention and treatment of vascular accidents.

The Synthetic Organic Chemical Manufacturers Association (SOCMA), of the US, has named Michael C. Nines, manager, Responsible Care, the chemical industry's voluntary initiative for continuous improvement in environmental, health, safety and security performance. He will lead SOCMA's Responsible Care Management Systems and RC14001 programmes and will direct SOCMA's third party certification programme. Prior to joining SOCMA, Nines was an assistant project manager/senior staff engineer for global consulting engineering firm URS Corporation, where he managed environmental, health and safety compliance activities for several large chemical manufacturing sites.
