Excelsyn, of Newcastle, UK, has announced the appointment of Phil Wrigley as operations director of its Engineering Technology business based in Durham. Wrigley joins the firm from speciality chemicals company Rohm and Haas, where he spent 10 years, most recently as European Region operations director.

Malvern Instruments has appointed Bernd Looser to the new post of applications specialist in process systems. One of his main areas of focus in the role will be to develop, test and prove new and innovative on-line measurement systems. Looser will also be involved in the development and execution of marketing activities and in furthering relationships with Malvern's global process customers. He has already contributed to Malvern's product development through his work on the company's patented diluter during a student placement in 2004.

Steven M. Niedelman, formerly deputy associate commissioner for Regulatory Operations for the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has joined Quintiles Consulting as executive vice president. Niedelman will be responsible for all operations at Quintiles Consulting, a provider of global regulatory, compliance and validation consulting services to the pharmaceutical, biologics and medical device industries.

Niedelman replaces Ron Johnson, who has been appointed to lead The Lewin Group, a health care and human services consultancy that is part of the Quintiles family of companies.

Chiral Technologies has appointed Joseph M. Barendt to the new position of chief operating officer. Previously, Dr Barendt was president of Ohio-based Gabriel Performance Products. Thomas B. Lewis, current president and ceo, will retire this summer and be succeeded by Dieter Heckmann. Effective with Dr Lewis's pending retirement, Heckmann will hold the position of president and ceo of both Chiral Technologies and Chiral Technologies Europe.

The manufacturing strategist organisation Britest has welcomed two new arrivals. Dr Derek Lindsay will assume the new role of Director of Innovation, and will co-ordinate and deliver programmes focused on increasing the rate of process innovation and the continued development of Britest's tools and methodologies. Lindsay joins Britest from NPIL Pharma Limited where he was r&d director. Dr Emma Westwood has been appointed Learning & Development Manager and will be extending her part-time consultancy role at Britest to focus more fully on training and development programmes within member companies using the Britest tools and methodologies.
