Penn Pharmaceutical Services has appointed David Black as its head of project management. He has previously held positions of business development director and customer services director at Excell Biotech, and has been ceo of Immutech.

Dr Gareth Jenkins has joined Excelsyn Molecular Development, Holywell, UK, as business development manager. Prior to joining, Excelsyn was business development manager at Peakdale Molecular, where he oversaw the company's growth from 12 employees to 65 and sealed alliances with De Novo Pharmaceuticals and Cyprotex. He has also held the position of business development manager at Ultrafine.

Dr Gareth DeBoos has become the new director of business development for Northern Europe at Juelich Fine Chemicals. His previous role was technical operations manager at Avecia Pharmaceuticals in Huddersfield, UK.

Chris Buxton has been appointed chief executive of the Processing and Packaging Machinery Association (PPMA). He succeeds Andrew Manly, who joined the Manu-facturing Technologies Association earlier this year. Buxton is currently on short-term secondment to the Cabinet Office as part of a team reporting on the effects of regulations on businesses, particularly small to medium sized firms.

Medical microsystems company Sphere Medical Holding, of Cambridge, UK, has appointed Dr Tony Martin as non-executive chairman. He is also non-executive chairman of NeuTec Pharma; chairman of Wound Solutions; and a director of Protedyne, a US based life sciences company. Until recently he served as president and ceo of Molecular Probes.

Thermo Electron Corporation has promoted Markus Schreyer to managing director of its Karlsruhe facility with immediate effect. He assumes responsibilities for site management from Dr Hartmut Braun. In addition to his responsibilities as managing director, his role as vice president of global sales will now encompass material characterisation products.

Dr Tim Tasker has become the new executive vice-president of clinical development and a member of the executive committee at Evotec. He has more than 23 years' global clinical development and business experience, having worked at Beecham, SmithKline Beecham (SB) and GlaxoSmithKline.
