Hosokawa Micron's Picomix ultra small laboratory mixer, which forms part of the Picoline series of ultra compact laboratory machines, is capable of processing very small batches of a few grams down to below 1gm.

As the principle of operation is the same as large production machines r&d departments can be confident in scale up when transferring to a full manufacturing process, says the company.

Picomix is a compact high shear impact mixer with a mixing volume of 25-100cc and the rotor speed and type can be adjusted to give high shear impact to very gentle mixing. As no bearings or seals are within the mixing zone contamination is avoided and product temperature rise is minimal. However, should heating or cooling be required then this can be achieved using slightly different designs of mixing chambers.

Cleaning of the Picomix is quick and easy and there is full discharge without any loss of material, says the company.

Drive power is 0.75kW and the maximum rotor speed is 6000rpm giving a tip speed of 20m/sec.
