Polaratherm improves carotenoid separation

Published: 1-Nov-2004

Selerity Technologies has demonstrated that its Polaratherm total temperature controller can improve sub-ambient separations of carotenoids - nutraceuticals that, when taken as a nutritional supplement, are powerful antioxidants that protect against heart disease and cancer, and boost the immune system.

Typically the quantification of carotenoids involves complex mobile phases with up to six components. The analysis is usually performed at ambient temperatures using a C18 or C30 column, with run times in excess of 60 minutes. By using the Polaratherm, Selerity has performed an analysis using a sub-ambient temperature program with a simplified mobile phase of 1.20% THF in

acetonitrile. The analysis time was reduced by more than 50% to less than 30 minutes, while the peaks became sharper at elevated temperatures.
