Sanofi-aventis is to sell its Colomiers production site in south-west France to subcontractor Unither.
The company says the sale is the result of a fall in the volume of medicinal products produced by the plant, which employs around 200 people and specialises in liquid forms (syrups, drops) and suppositories. In particular, it makes the anti-convulsive agent Depakine (sodium valproate) and the cough syrup Rhinathiol (carbocistein).
The Colomiers plant will be the second to be purchased by Unither; at the end of 2001, it took over the sanofi-aventis plant at Coutances on the north west coast of the country.
Unither, which employs around 600 people, had a turnover of Euro 76m euros in 2007; sales were expected to reach €83m in 2008.
