Sculpting an image

Visitors to Avecia's new Advanced Biologics Centre (ABC 5000) in Billingham, UK, will be greeted by a striking new sculpture.

Avecia wanted its new facility to include 'a fitting interpretation of its work in developing innovative manufacturing processes for new types of medicines', and issued the challenge to the Cleveland College of Art and Design. The design now in place, which focuses on part of the classic DNA helix shape, is the work of 32 year-old final year student Victoria Huntley.

'I wanted to demonstrate the shared make-up of DNA and highlight the breakthroughs increasingly being made in new generations of advanced medicines,' she said. 'The polished steel literally reflects our common heritage in DNA, while the open design reflects the company atmosphere, and the angle exploits the impact of natural light within the reception area.'
