YSI brews added enzyme efficiency

Enzyme company Biocatalysts has increased the efficiency of its developmental fermentation processes two to three times with the help of YSI's 2730 on-line monitoring system.

The company continually develops new fermentation protocols for novel products, mainly using E. coli and Saccharomyces cervisiae. Careful monitoring of both the nutrients and byproducts is crucial. Using the YSI 2730 on-line monitoring system in conjunction with the YSI2700 biochemistry analyser, scientists at Biocatalysts can automatically monitor and adjust nutrient and byproduct concentrations without interrupting the fermentation process.

Sampling takes place under aseptic conditions and poses no contamination risk, says YSI's distributor, Analytical Technologies. The YSI 2700 is a flexible dual channel analyser, which allows customers to select from a choice of nine key chemistries, including glucose, lactate, glutamine, methanol and ethanol. Biocatalysts has configured its system to primarily measure glucose and ethanol, although other metabolites are routinely assessed.
