Adult medicines for children concerns

Published: 1-May-2004

Expert consultation is being carried out by the European Union (EU) on the effect of adult medicines on children, reflecting widespread concern that such drugs need to be specially assessed for young patients. Notably, comments are being requested by the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products (EMEA) on the effect of medicines on young kidneys, for instance. Given the key exposure of kidneys to medicines, EMEA is concerned of possible unintended long-term effects that may emerge in later life.

It has issued a discussion paper, hoping to spark advice on what further studies may be required, with a deadline for comments of May 31. This follows further consultation completed in early April by the European Commission on its draft regulation on medicinal products for paediatric use, which should be tabled later this year.
