US chemistry outsourcing company Cambridge Major Laboratories, of Germantown, WI, has begun GMP operations in its new, 50,000ft2 state-of-the-art cGMP facility.

The company accelerated its plans for transferring its activities to the new purpose-built site following a 50% growth in sales last year. 'Due to our remarkable growth in 2004, the pressure was on to transition GMP operations to the new, larger site as soon as possible,' said Brian Scanlan, vice president of corporate development at Cambridge Major.

The company commenced planning for the new greenfield site in June 2002. It broke ground in June the following year and announced dedication of the site in June '04. "We have moved rapidly to qualify the site,' said Scanlan. 'Teams have worked for the past six months mapping out, testing and qualifying the entire HVAC system, utilities and GMP processing suites. Now that our GMP suites are fully qualified, we are focusing our efforts on the plant areas, and we anticipate completion of this in the next 1-2 months.'

The new facility will increase Cambridge Major's reactor capacity approximately tenfold and almost double its process r&d kilolab capability. There will be some other speciality equipment on the new site, such as large-scale cryogenics and 100-gallon hydrogenation capability.

The company currently has 50 employees, but plans to increase this to 75 by the end of this year.
