Helsinn's opens a new affiliate facility

Published: 28-Aug-2001

Helsinn, a privately owned pharmaceutical group with subsidiaries in Switzerland, Ireland and Portugal, has announced the opening of its affiliate Helsinn Advanced Synthesis SA (HAS).

With this new addition, Helsinn has strengthened its position as a key player in the development and manufacturing of pharmaceutical products.

This completes a four-phase project:

  • the completion of a new finishing plant — drying and micronisation (1999);

  • a new r&d and QC labs (2000);

  • the creation of a specific technology transfer department facilitating communication between the three Helsinn companies and its outsourcing partners (2001);

  • the construction of the new chemical plant, Helsinn Advanced Synthesis SA (2001).

    The new HAS manufacturing plant was conceived for the production of cGMP Advanced Intermediates (AIs), Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) and High Potency Active Ingredients (HPAIs).

    The production of AIs and APIs is performed in five separate isolated bays, with a total capacity of 40m3. The production zones and maintenance area are also separated. This same level of segregation also applies to the five centrifuges and the two dryer suites.

    This new approach to chemical production applies to standards already in use in final dosage production. Helsinn, therefore, performs large-scale chemical synthesis and manufacturing in a pharmaceutical environment.

    Helsinn Advanced Synthesis will not only produce APIs with standard dosage ranges, but also HPAIs.

    In fact, the Helsinn Group has already successfully produced its first high potent active ingredient in a specially designed small scale HPAI-plant.

    With Helsinn Chemicals (Switzerland), Helsinn Advanced Synthesis (Switzerland) and Helsinn Chemicals Ireland , the Helsinn Group can now offer three manufacturing plants with a total capacity of over 120 m³, all producing exclusively under cGMP.

    Contract Manufacturing has become the core business for the chemical operations of Helsinn's Group.
