The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has launched an initiative with academia to carry out studies into medicines safety. It is hoped that the collaboration will lead to closer links between research groups and the UK regulatory agency and improve knowledge in the area of drug safety.
The announcement comes after pharmacoepidemiology researchers were invited to the MHRA headquarters in London to debate areas of medicines safety.
The MHRA will be asking academia to submit research applications as part of a formal peer-reviewed research initiative. MHRA ceo Kent Woods said: "There are important current challenges to be faced in pharmacoepidemiology and this joint initiative between the MHRA and academia will help tackle these. This is an important step to creating a network of researchers with experience in drug safety."
