GEA enhances sustainability of pharmaceutical freeze-drying

The novel LYOAIR cooling system can reduce the energy consumption of pharmaceutical freeze-drying by more than 50%

GEA, a systems supplier for the pharmaceutical industry, has bolstered its pharmaceutical freeze-drying offerings to make the process more sustainable.

Enhancing energy efficiency through a smart cooling system

At ACHEMA 2024, GEA presented LYOAIR, the comapny’s latest cooling system with natural refrigerants and efficient compressors, which aims to optimise production processes, reduce environmental impact and save energy.

Microwaves for continuous processing

GEA also presented the benefits of using microwaves for fast and efficient freeze-drying — offering advantages in cost and supply efficiency.

Bringing microwaves into the equation could also enable continuous processing instead of the traditional batch method, allowing manufacturers to accelerate their processes.

LYOVAC ECO

Freeze dryers typically have a high associated energy consumption, so to counteract this problem, GEA has introduced LYOVAC ECO Mode, which optimises the process through dynamic condenser temperature control.

It also regulates the mushroom valve, meaning pharmaceutical manufacturers can unlock significant energy savings.
