Help the Aged, a UK charity for disadvantaged older people, has recognised Professor Linda Partridge CBE in its 17th annual "Living Legends" award ceremony for her work on the genetics of ageing in the fruit fly.
Her research found significant similarities in the ways that different organisms age and has opened the way to understanding human ageing. She has also pioneered the investigation of the relationship between ageing and insulin-signalling pathways, and is currently investigating why a low calorie diet appears to slow age-related changes in the brain, muscles and bones.
Partridge was presented with the Research Into Ageing Award by Her Majesty The Queen at Windsor Castle in May. According to Help the Aged, 74% of women aged 85+ suffer from a disability, compared with 26% of those aged 50-64. Research into Ageing, the biomedical research arm of Help the Aged, uses public donations to select and fund £2m of research projects every year.
