Top pharma and medical firms were honoured for their contributions to business success in the 2007 Queen's Awards for Enterprise.

Winners included UK company Mumford, which supplies drug delivery devices and reusable medical products for blood sampling; Pharmaterials, a research and testing service to the biotech and pharma industries; and Thomson Scientific, which offers an integrated on-line data system for drug development.

In the scheme's 43rd year, Her Majesty The Queen announced 139 business Awards - the second highest total for 10 years.

Each winning company receives an engraved crystal bowl and is entitled to use the Queen's Award Emblem on packaging and marketing material for five years. Winners will benefit from a visit to their premises by a representative of The Queen, and will be invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace in the summer.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "Queen's Award winning companies are standard-bearers for the very best of British business. These firms embody the spirit of enterprise and innovation that is so vital to the future of Britain's economy. Whether large or small, every one of this year's winning organisations has achieved outstanding success in its field."

Applicants are invited to enter for the 2009 Queen's Awards. The deadline is 31 October 2008.
