Seventy-five years after Johan Ernst Nyrop founded what is now GEA Niro, the company is still going strong, innovating and looking forward to a bright future.

Nyrop invented and patented the rotary atomiser in 1924 but it was not until 10 November 1933 that he founded the company that would bring the new technology to the world. Today, 75 years on, GEA Niro has developed the rotary atomiser and associated technology such as spray dryers, fluid beds and freeze dryers to become vital technology for the food, dairy, pharmaceutical and chemical industries

Innovation has carved the route for the company’s success, but it has always been innovation with the customer in mind: never just for its own sake. The Niro Atomizer itself laid the foundation, and the KN-Wheel, developed for highly abrasive applications, opened new markets early in the company’s history.

However, the innovation was not locked in history, it has been continuous throughout the company’s history: small-scale plants for research and development operations to help companies develop new products and optimise processing techniques; fluid bed dryers and MSD (Multi-Stage Dryers) for increased flexibility and product control; agglomeration technology for enhanced handling; the IFD (Integrated Filter Dryer) to reduce product losses, increase efficiency and reduce plant footprint; the world-beating F1000 rotary atomiser, the biggest in the world for flue cleaning operations; and Computational Fluid Dynamics to optimise all processing needs.

Despite the current world slowdown in trade, GEA Niro is confident about its future. Its key areas of expertise are in the food industry, helping to bring more exciting food products to new markets throughout the developing world; the chemical industry to help develop new environmentally appropriate products, power generation techniques, and clean fuels; and the pharmaceutical industry to make the peoples of the world healthier and happier. All GEA Niro’s markets have secure long-term futures that pave the way for the company’s continued success.
