Umicore, a developer of metal based APIs for the pharmaceutical industry, has built a US$10m platinum based API plant in Buenos Aires, Argentina in an effort to improve quality and become a market leader in platinum APIs.
The GMP-approved plant became fully operational earlier this year and uses the company's precious metal chemistry expertise to produce platinum APIs for oncology products.
Umicore currently enjoys a 30% market share in Latin America with its Cis-Platin, Carbo-Platin and Oxali-Platin compounds.
"The capacity of the new plant allows us to supply 50% of the worldwide demand," says Matthias Grehl, Umicore's business line manager. "We target a 30% market share in platinum APIs by 2015."
Grehl says Umicore is also in talks with partners to develop "new, maybe gold-based" products at the Buenos Aires plant in the future.
